Mother's Day 2020

As it usually is, Mother's Day was nice this year, if not a little unusual because of the homebound nature of it.

I received one of my favorite things. Yay! 😋

The evening before we got dinner takeout from a historic, haunted restaurant I like that has a delicious salmon entree that I crave on a regular basis.

Sam made me a sweet card.

John got creative and wrote "Happy Mother's" ("Day" didn't fit 🤣) with food on the kitchen counter.

My brother Nathan and his girlfriend Kat stopped by to give me this pretty little flower plant.

My friend and ministering sister Sharalyn dropped off a gift for me that included this fun and delicious-smelling candle.

I'm so thankful to be a mother! It really is the career I wanted more than anything else in life.

The Beginning of My Garden

I hadn't done any vegetable gardening in about a decade because when we moved to Iowa in 2010 we went away for half the summer every year so I wasn't around to take care of a garden in its time of greatest need. But I like the idea of being more self-sufficient and producing your own food, and Covid-19 motivated me to finally do just that. I was going to take a gardening class this year and plan things out to begin a garden in 2021, but a pandemic and economic crisis changes things, doesn't it? So instead I bought a book about gardening in Massachusetts and jumped right in.

I started with indoor seedlings for the first six weeks or so. I also had two hydroponic jars for basil and mint, and an indoor grow kit for strawberries.

Basil sprouts! How exciting! They were the first thing to sprout so they're special to me. 😘

The first cucumber sprout! {Can you see it? 😂}

More cucumber sprouts a few days later. They came up fast!

A few weeks in, there was nothing yet from the green peppers and strawberries.

💙💚💙💚

Success was coming up from the mint (in the jar) and the onion seedlings (in the egg carton), and of course from the two pots of wonderful and reliable cucumber seedlings.

Mint and onions (but never eaten together 😝)

The green peppers and strawberries remained shy.

My little indoor garden was on a sunny windowsill at the back of the dining room and it turned out to be a good spot for it.

Later in May I started bambino carrot seedlings in a big pot that I kept inside for the first few days.

At the end of May the plants started going on daily field trips outside to the back porch for a few hours to start getting used to being outside. They were growing well, including the green peppers--finally!

It was fun to begin a garden this way with seedlings indoors and then gradually start moving them outside. It was one of my favorite stages of gardening, nurturing their birth and newborn days! 👶

Over the River and Through the Woods

We hadn't done a family nature walk in awhile, so on Memorial Day we went on a new-to-us trail that my sister and niece recommended. It was a beautiful trail through the woods and by a river. Other than some snakes we saw 😱, it was lovely!

This reminded me of the haunted woods in Anne of Green Gables.

Peter and John bringing up the rear.

Ferns are so pretty and I like the way they look in pictures (and in real life too).

I love woods! They speak to me as much as the ocean does, and more than mountains and prairies do, though they are of course beautiful too. But I'm definitely a forest and ocean kind of gal.

More ferns 😍

I wore a fanny pack and it worked great! I'm so glad they're back in again; they're totally practical.

It was a really nice walk and I'm looking forward to doing it again this fall when the leaves are changing!

The Not-So-Secret Life of Pets

In addition to delightful companionship, Boo Boo makes for a wonderful home security system.

Bentwood loves to lay in the sun.

Boo Boo and Violet have their kennels to retreat to when they need some alone time. Which has probably been more than ever lately. I can relate. Maybe I should get a kennel for myself.

Boo Boo likes to hang out in the kitchen, for obvious reasons.

I saw these dog food seasonings on Shark Tank and thought it was a great idea, so I bought a pack of them. BB and V definitely approve!
