A Strange Incident Involving an Ear

On a Friday afternoon not too long ago, I noticed that my 3-year-old son John's right ear had suddenly, inexplicably swollen up. Why it had done this was a complete mystery to me because he was fine, with no other symptoms except a huge puffy ear. So I didn't worry too much about it, especially since the swelling was gone by the next morning and hasn't returned since. I took pictures of this strange little incident so that we'll be able to laugh about how funny he looked with a huge ear when he's older. I'm sure he'll appreciate that, don't you?

The super-morphed ear:
What his ears normally look like:
See how much it stuck out?!

He was oblivious to the fact that he had a huge morphed ear. And he had no idea that I was laughing at his expense. Because for what purpose do we have children than for our own amusement? Ha ha ha!

Well, that's so weird! I'm glad he seems OK.

I wonder if he had a little allergy. I remember when I lived in Virginia for a while one day my hands and feet swelled up ginormously and it turned out I had a reaction to some mold or something.

Very interesting! I have seen people with allergic reactions to jewelry experience similar things. But this...this is just odd. I wonder if he bumped into something while playing and it (obviously) just didn't phase him. I'm glad he is okay!

That is so strange. I am glad it resolved itself. Sometimes these things are more stress for us than for them. Seems like he was perfectly happy.

What a blessing that he didn't feel any pain with the swelling! My 15 year old has a swollen cold sore lip today and I sure feel bad for him.

Donna, I too have an ear that will very sometimes turn all red and become very hot. It's happened since I was young but I don't know what causes it. Then it goes away for months. Odd. Glad it was just the ear!

That's weird! Yeah, wonder if he had some random allergic reaction.

I'm thinking the allergic reaction too. If he had bumped it, it seems like there would have been pain or something. Wow. That was really swollen. It is pretty funny since he was fine.
I'm sure he'll love that picture when he grows up!

Yeah, it's possible that his ear brushed up against something and he had a reaction to it. If that's the case, I wish I knew what it was!

I know, I know! My son has had this happen 3 times that I can think of. I took him to the Dr. cuz it looked like it was going to explode the first time and he said it was a bug bite. Either a spider or a mosquito. He is very allergic to misquito bites. Then last summer he got a bee sting on his ear and it got huge again! I will send you pictures! Give him benadryl and lots of fluids. the ears don't have as much circulaation as the rest of the body, so they take longer to clear out.

Holy Moly!! Was he handling something new and scratch his ear after? Or play with poison ivy playing outside? That is a Will Smith ear!!

I'm guessing it's a spider bite, but check with your doc if the swelling doesn't go down. My son got a huge lump on his forehead from a spider in his bed. It didn't bother him, but it looked nasty. Hope it goes away.

Holly Hannah! I can't believe how puffy his ear got. I would have freaked out. Even with a puffy ear he is adorable. I am glad it went away! Thanks for your sweet comments on my blog. I hope everything is okay with your guy. It is worth looking into because even if he does not have the problem, they have all kinds of things to help the kids get back on track developmentally.
