My First Pupu Party

On Sunday evening we went over to Jared and Matisse Madden's home for a "pupu party." If I remember correctly what Matisse said, "pupu" is the Hawaiian term for heavy hors d'oeuvres. We had dinner that way, buffet style, and it was delicious. It's a very good idea for entertaining that I will probably use in the future. We had fun with our friends who were there, and I also really liked the Madden's new place. It's in a big renovated factory from around the Civil War era; you walk down the halls and there's exposed brick from the original factory intermingled with the newly remodeled walls. How ideal for a history-lover like myself! Their condo itself is breathtaking--super-high ceilings and a really cool industrial look.

I tried a new recipe and made this seven-layer bean dip that turned out to be quite good. Go me! I was tempted to buy a frozen appetizer at the store that I could then just pop in the oven, but I remembered my New Year's Resolution to become better about making food. Even though it took more time, it was much more rewarding and I'm glad that I did it!

Here are Amanda, me, Matisse and Guy, Corina, and Jessie. They're all so good-looking! I, however, have been going through an ugly stage lately. This happens every so often where I just don't look very pretty for awhile. I blame it on the winter.

I've always had muscular well-shaped calves but they don't look good here! Anyway, I'll stop being shallow. These are great people and it was fun to get together with them. Things like this help me with another of my Resolutions: to be more social and enjoy life outside of my routine-oriented life more often!

P.S. I stole these pictures from Matisse's blog. Thank you for everything, Tisse!

I think you are too hard on yourself, Donna. You look great in those pictures!

Wow, Matisse has got a great house!

Katie, do you remember Patrick Clyde? Matisse is his sister! She actually visited at the Philly singles ward when we were there and stayed with Shanna Ford when Shanna and Patrick were going out. Isn't that funny? Now years later, Matisse's husband Jared is co-workers with Peter at Pru and we discovered our long-ago connection when they moved here to Hartford. It's funny how it's a small world, isn't it!

Oh, and I meant to add that you need to stop beating yourself up! You look great!

Ah, now I see why you felt unattractive that night... As I remember correctly, you thought Pat Clyde was an attractive guy (no offense, Peter. She thinks you're attractive, too). Its probably Patrick's genes :-) Is he married now, btw? I know that Shanna Ford got married a short time after you graduated. That was after she dated and was dumped by Jon Lubeck... who is married now too...

I wonder sometimes if its not just more of a small Mormon world. One Sunday, we ran into one of Andy's old missionary companions at church here. He was out here for a conference for work, and randomly decided to attend our ward. We had him over for dinner and such... nice guy, but so random that we ran into him! Thats what makes me think its a Mormon thing.

Nah, I don't remember having a thing for Patrick in that way, he was always just a friend. He is married to the sister of Matisse's husband. He's graduating from BYU with an MBA and moving to work in the White Plains area of New York.

The ugly thing happens every winter with me. My skin gets dry, pale, and my face breaks out, my hair gets dark and limp from the lack of sun, and I don't get much sun or fresh air. Plus I've been staying up way too late for awhile and that gives me big bags under my eyes and does nothing good for my appearance. So that's why I've been feeling kinda yucky lately. I expect that cloud will lift soon. I hope so anyway!
